John Surman first made a name for himself when playing in Mike Westbrook’s orchestra. A master on the soprano saxophone and the bass clarinet, following collaborations with Alexis Korner he released his first recording in 1968. Since that time, his albums have been released by cult record label, ECM. One of the important figures in the development of European jazz, his much lauded contributions to music include incorporating folk elements as well as British chamber music. For his poetic performance at the festival, he will be joined by Chris Laurence on the double bass as well as a string quartet.
